The Land

Opoia Āwhitu is located in Matakawau which is a historic rural,coastal village settlement located on the eastern side of the Āwhitu Peninsula overlooking the Manukau Harbour in Auckland, New Zealand.

Early Māori History

Mana Whenua: The area is the traditional land of Ngāti Te Ata

Name Origin: Āwhitu translates to "longing to return", while Matakawau breaks down into mata (face) and kawau (shag/cormorant).

Pā Sites: In pre-European times, Māori established numerous pā sites along the peninsula to make use of rich food sources from the Manukau Harbour, Tasman Sea, and local wetlands. The spiritual guardian of the harbour is the taniwha Kaiwhare.

Pioneer Settlers: Europeans settled the area in the 1850s and 1860s, establishing farming and maritime trade. Steamers regularly visited local jetties to collect milk and cream

Originally a dairy and then deer farm in post settlement times the development of this beautiful land has been planned to make the most of the natural landscape. Each lot has its own unique outlook and water view ensuring there is some thing for everyone.

The Sections

Offering 9 lots with flat to rolling contours with some steeper features. Geotechnical testing has identified good ground and proposed building sites. Each site will control its own waste & storm water and have the ability to be off grid or connected to the power grid.
